One Fine Day the Other

They have lived together for forty years.
On a morning after their coffee and rolls
the one says I'm leaving.
Not for the store
I'm leaving forever.

The other tries to take it in
incomprehensible
and then for months

considers over and over
the breaking apart,
as well the inevitable broken heart.

School of America

hello hello
hello America...
nobody home.

“What's that? crawling
bellying toward us?”
asks the guest.

He has heard paranoid reports
of mysterious crashes
missing persons
bodies dropping on Wall Street.

hello hello
hello America...
nobody home.

“What's that? crawling
bellying toward us”
the guest presses.

“They let him out of the Warren.
He won't be causing trouble.”
The guide wonders
Has he told the guest too much?

“I see barracks in the distance.
Are those the dormitories?”
“There are no barracks,
just mirages of the desert.
Come, we'll meet the Chief.
He's eager you see the school,
the latest methods of instruction.”
