Simultaneously, the arts and humanities are deprived of public funding, stripped of their civic relevance, and recast as ornamental rather than essential to democratic life. At the same time, the conviction that art can and should be transgressive gives way to a fetishization of simulated images that tell us nothing about the seriousness of our contemporary collapse. Algorithms do not merely fail to provide context; they actively undermine the conditions necessary for context to emerge.
